How to install a blind

This step-by-step guide provides detailed information on how to complete a task.

It includes a list of tools and materials needed for the task.

Please be advised that this is only a guide and I cannot accept responsibility for any work undertaken. If you are not confident undertaking electrical work then you should have this work undertaken by a qualified electrician.

Tools and Materials

  • Blind set (including the blind and brackets)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Appropriate screws and fixings for your wall and weight of blind. Do not use the supplied screws and fixings as they are cheap, rubbish and do not know what type of wall you have.
  • Drill
  • Impact driver or screwdriver
  • Family member or friend to help (weight and size dependant)

Step by Step Guide

1

Make sure blind fits

Hold the blind with brackets up in the recess or above to make sure the blind fits.

2

Taking measurements

Lay the blind down with the brackets on and measure the distance between the holes. Then measure the width of the window recess and decide whether you need to install the brackets into the top or side of the recess.

3

Mark bracket positions

  • Once you have decided on top or side fixing you need to consider how far the blind sits away from the window frame allowing for the window handle (with or without key in?), as you do what to hit it every time you open and close the blind.
  • Measure how far out the handle sits then add 2-3cm and mark to get the distance of you first bracket hole from the window frame. If brackets are going into the top of the recess, you need to also consider how much you need to come in from the side using the measurement you have.
  • Then hold the bracket up align the back screw hole with your mark and mark the remaining holes.
4

Drill holes

  • Using an appropriate drill bit, drill holes into the marked spots about 4-8 cm deep. If you are unsure about drilling into plasterboard or solid walls, please refer to my guides ‘How to hang on plasterboard’ or ‘How to hang on solid wall’.
  • If you are drilling into the top of the recess after about 2-4 cm you may find your drill cannot drill any further this is because you have hit the lintel. To drill through the lintel, you are going to need a stronger drill called an SDS drill.
5

Wall fixings

Once your holes are drilled, check that the appropriate screws you are using will go all the way in by poking into the hole. Then insert your appropriate wall fixing.

6

Attach brackets

Hold brackets to align with your wall fixings then using an impact driver to drill screws in until tight. Pull down on the bracket to ensure secure to hold weight of blind.

7

Mount the blind

With the brackets in place, carefully slot the blind into the brackets. Depending on the type of blind, this may involve sliding it in or clicking it into place. Confirm that the blind is properly secure by pulling on the blind.

8

Test the operation

Once the blind is mounted, test its operation. Pull the cords or use the control mechanism to raise and lower the blind to ensure it works smoothly.

9

Secure cords (If applicable)

For blinds with hanging cords, make sure to secure them properly to prevent any potential safety hazards, especially if you have children or pets. Many blinds come with safety devices or cleats to wrap and secure the cords.

10

Final check

Do a final check to ensure the blind is properly secured, and functions correctly. Refer to the manufacturing instructions and add any accessories like fascia’s.
